Southampton remain keen on Manchester United defender Brandon Williams
According to Hampshire Live (h/t Manchester Evening News), Southampton remain interested in Manchester United starlet Brandon Williams heading into the summer transfer window.
The Saints are long-term admirers of the young full-back and even made an effort to sign him on loan last January. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, was concerned about squad depth and vetoed the deal. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
Staying at Old Trafford has, however, done the 20-year-old little good. Opportunities have been hard to come by and he has made just 14 appearances this season. It represents a far cry from the 36 caps he won last season.
The player, for his part, is keen to kick on and obtain regular playtime next season. With it looking unlikely at United, a switch even one on loan could prove beneficial to his progress.
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl rates Williams and has a decent record in developing players. Playing for the Austrian could very well help Williams in his development. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
“He is an interesting player and a good player, yes.”
Solskjaer recently admitted that he does not see many players leaving United in the summer. The Norwegian’s comments may attribute to permanent deals and not loan departures.
Despite being capable of playing on either flank, Williams finds himself lower down in the United pecking order.
Luke Shaw and Alex Telles are ahead of him when it comes to the left flank while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is an automatic choice on the right. With United seeking to bring in either Kieran Trippier or Max Aarons, Williams could potentially find himself in a sticky situation.

The likes of Jesse Lingard, James Garner and to an extent Diogo Dalot have all benefitted from going out on loan this season. There is no reason why Williams cannot follow in their footsteps in the summer.
