Solskjaer opens up on the future of Juan Mata at Manchester United
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Express), Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opened up on the future of veteran midfielder Juan Mata.
The 33-year-old’s contract at United expires this summer. While the club does have the option of extending it by another year, they are yet to make a call regarding it.
He made a rare start last night against Wolverhampton Wanderers and showcased he may still have something to offer. Mata’s goal from the penalty spot eventually turned out to be the winner on the night.
Solskjaer admitted that the club continues to be in talks with Mata heading into the summer transfer window. As of yet, they do not appear to have reached a consensus.
“Yeah we are talking to Juan. We’ll sit down and of course it’s a bit of what he wants as well.”
The Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order at United and has largely been utilized as a peripheral player. Armed with years of experience, he has been able to come in and do a job for us when needed.
“I don’t give him enough game time but he’s such a top professional, top quality so we’ll have a good discussion.”
From the horse’s mouth!
The player, for his part, is certain of what he wants. He, however, admitted that he is unsure of what the future holds for him. Mata still has a few years left in him but whether it will be at United remains unclear.
“I know what I want, I am happy with how I feel physically and mentally and I am still happy to play football for some years.”
For now, the 33-year-old’s focus remains on the Eropa League final against Villarreal on the 26th. Mata has already won the trophy twice, one with Chelsea in 2012/13 and later with United in 2016/17.

The game against Wolves was an emotional one for Mata. The Spaniard celebrated his goal by dedicating it to his mother Marta Garcia, who passed away earlier this year.
Hopefully, United will win the Europa League later this week to being what has been a difficult season for the veteran to a joyous end.
