Paul Scholes urges Manchester United to strengthen two key positions this summer
Speaking on the Webby and O’Neil Show on Youtube, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has named the two positions he wants the club to strengthen in during the summer transfer window.
United did well to end the season in second spot in the Premier League. It represents a marked improvement over our third placed finish last season.
Despite proving themselves to be the closest challengers to Manchester City, United still have a few glaring deficiencies to address if they are keen to challenge for the title.
United have been linked with the likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, in recent months. The Red Devils also recently extended Edinson Cavani’s future at the club for another season.
Scholes believes extending the Uruguayan’s contract means United will focus their attention away from bringing in a striker. He expects the club to look at other areas of the pitch that are in need of reinforcements.
The United legend admits that the side is lacking in creativity in midfield and could do with an attacking midfielder. Scholes admits that players such as Jack Grealish or Jadon Sancho would be ideal additions.
“‘Think we need someone who is a creative midfield player. Grealish or Sancho, one of them would be ideal.”
A solid foundation?
Another position that needs to be addressed is at centre-back. As things stand Harry Maguire remains our best defender but lacks a dependable partner alongside him.
While the likes of Victor Lindelof have done well, he has failed to showcase he is the solution going forward. Bringing in a defender of a higher calibre could make all the difference in the world, Scholes reckons.
“I would like to see a centre-half come in next to Maguire. I think Lindelof is doing alright, I just think alright isn’t good enough to win a league.”
Scholes goes on to admit that he would welcome the signing of Paris Saint-Germain ace Marquinhos. The Brazilian is a stellar defender but will not come cheap.

Manchester City showed last summer that signing the right player could make all the difference in the world. Their acquisition of Ruben Dias plugged a major hole in their squad, enabling them to emerge as title challengers and eventual champions.
United will do well to address the issue with a similar approach. We cannot afford to stand still while teams around us face a summer of rebuild.
