Liverpool in pursuit of Pedro Goncalves amidst Manchester United interest
According to Record (h/t The Express), Liverpool are seeking to steal a march on signing Pedro Goncalves who has also drawn interest from Manchester United.
The Merseysiders are keen to strengthen their squad after what has been a disappointing campaign for them. They have been keen on Goncalves for some time now having unsuccessfully tried to sign him in January.
The 22-year-old attacker is enjoying an exceptionally prolific season, helping Sporting Lisbon to their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years. He has so far made 31 appearances in the league, scoring 20 goals and making four assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
While Liverpool’s defensive issues have been well highlighted, their attack has also struggled to fire on all cylinders this season. A particular lack of goals from midfield has been a major factor.
With Georginio Wijnaldum also set to leave, it could prove to be a summer of change at Anfield. Goncalves will however not come cheap and has a release clause of £52m.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have failed to replace Philippe Coutinho while Naby Keita has largely been a disappointment. Sporting for their part are keen to keep hold of Goncalves and are working on a new deal to improve his release clause to £69m.
Nicknamed the new Bruno Fernandes, Goncalves has a similar eye for goal as the United star. Just 22, the youngster still has a long way to go in his career and will be a long term prospect.
Goncalves has experience of life in England, having spent two years at Wolverhampton Wanderers. During that time, he made just one senior appearance and was largely involved with the Under-23 side.

A versatile player, Goncalves was seen by United as a cheaper alternative to Jadon Sancho. With our interest in the English winger picking up again, it remains to be seen if we make a beeline for Goncalves.
