Manchester United urged to replace Paul Pogba with Jack Grealish

Rene Meulensteen urges Manchester United to replace Paul Pogba with Jack Grealish

According to Stadium Astro (h/t The Metro), former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has urged the club to sell Paul Pogba in the upcoming summer transfer window.

He believes that the funds obtained would help the Red Devils put together a squad capable of challenging for the title.

United are far from the finished article with our shortcomings being brutally exposed by Liverpool last night at Old Trafford.

Pogba had a forgettable night against Liverpool

Pogba once again started on the left, a position that Meulensteen believes unbalances the United formation. The Frenchman had a game to forget and was responsible for marking Roberto Firmino as the Brazilian put Liverpool ahead on the night.

“You play him from the left OK you try to manufacture something there.”

Meulensteen does not hold Pogba capable of doing a job as a part of the United double-pivot either. He believes the midfielder does not perform his defensive duties.

“Pogba creates an imbalance in the team because he has to play, he can’t play as one of the two pivots. Defensively people run off him so he doesn’t do his defensive job.”

The right replacement

With just a year to go on his current deal, Meulensteen has advocated for United to sell the Frenchman in the summer. Pogba has failed to reach the levels expected of him at United and he believes it is time the club called time on his stint.

“Maybe the best way is to say can we get some money from him and look at what we need.”

While he has doubts regarding Declan Rice, Meluensteen believes Jack Grealish can do a proper job of replacing Pogba in the United setup.

“A player like Grealish, he would have the DNA to play for Man Utd and the stature for it and he would have the ambition but it would change the outlook of the team.”

While we would welcome a move for Grealish, it will do little good if we were to lose Pogba. United’s problems run deeper than just one player and Pogba for all his criticism has impressed this season.
