“Half-truth” – Cavani reveals how close he came to leaving Manchester United

Edinson Cavani reveals how close he came to leaving Manchester United in the summer

Speaking to 2 de Punta via Goal (h/t Teamtalk), Edinson Cavani has revealed that there was some truth in him seeking a move away from Manchester United this summer.

The 34-year-old joined the club on a free last summer. He has since impressed, scoring key goals, especially since the injury-induced absence of Anthony Martial.

Speculation surrounded his future until earlier this week when he penned a new deal, committing his future to Old Trafford. It comes as a relief to a side that is sorely in need of a prolific topscorer upfront.

While he admitted that certain aspects were exaggerated, Cavani revealed that the chances of him signing with Boca Juniors were a real possibility.

“The possibility I was going to sign for them [Boca] was real, but I was always clear. What has been said and printed is half true, half lies. Sometimes it’s like that – but the chance was real.”

While his immediate future lies at United, he has refused to rule out a switch to Boca in the future. He has been in conversation with the club’s vice president, Juan Roman Riquelme regarding that for some years now.

“Has the door with Boca been left open? You’d need to ask Boca if the door is open. Today the reality is what it is, I’m at Manchester United and I’m fully focused.”

While Cavani admits that he misses his family. Two key factors helped swap his decision in United’s favour.

One was the club’s attitude towards him and the other, his teammates asking him to stay put. The fact that he chose to undertake the greater good speaks volumes about his character as a player.

Cavani’s decision will have gone down well with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was keen to see the player stay. In fact, the duo shares a good relationship.
