Owen Hargreaves urges Manchester United to seek strength in numbers over a big-money signing

According to BT Sports (h/t The Express), former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has urged the club to not blow their transfer budget on either Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Both players are among the best in their position and would certainly improve the Red Devils side. However, Hargreaves believes signing them is unrealistic and the club is better off investing money elsewhere.

The 40-year-old wants United to instead focus on bringing in a right-winger, a holding midfielder and another centre-back. His choices include Jadon Sancho, Raphinha and Declan Rice.

“I think every ex-Man United player or fan would love Erling Haaland or Harry Kane, but I think the money that they would cost right now in the climate, I don’t think it’s realistic.”

Hargreaves believes United already have the solution to their striking woes at the club. He has been impressed by Edinson Cavani and insists that an extension of his stay will free up the funds needed elsewhere.

“You could spend that Haaland or Kane money on three players.”

He goes on to add that bringing in another midfielder such as Rice would make Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes’ lives easier. The Red Devils do have a number of options in the position but could do with an upgrade over Fred and Nemanja Matic.

Go big or go home

Hargreaves’ idea is not shared by former teammate Paul Scholes. The Ginger Prince remains adamant that United should stick to bringing in Kane or Haaland.

His opinion is based on two considerations. Cavani’s ageing body and the trio of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all being wide-men.

While we would love to have either Haaland or Kane, Hargreaves’ words ring true. The club faces a pivotal summer and cannot risk throwing it away in search of just one major addition.

We have a promising young squad that could benefit from being augmented in different positions. We are not yet in a position where just one player can make or break our chances of coming out on top.
