Man United to face the music from UEFA for getting involved in the Super League

Manchester United amongst ESL clubs set to face the music from UEFA

According to ESPN, Manchester United among other European Super League clubs are set to face the music from UEFA following the fallout of a tumultuous few weeks.

UEFA is now ready to pursue severe disciplinary action against clubs that signed up to the Super League. The maximum punishment will entail a two-year ban from the Champions League and the Europa League.

UEFA have spent the past 10 days in conversation with the 12 clubs in an effort to agree a lesser sanction. They have also sought a commitment from these clubs not to reignite any efforts regarding the ESL in the future.

According to the report, UEFA has already reached an agreement with seven clubs. This includes the six English clubs and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Inter Milan are close to an agreement, while the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and AC Milan have failed to distance themselves from the ESL.

These four clubs look set to face the brunt of the blowback and are in violation of Section 51 of the organization’s statutes. UEFA due appear to have to go through a long legal battle to punish the clubs still involved.

Divide and conquer

UEFA appear to be taking a divide and conquer policy to ensure the ESL plans are dead in the water. The competition will be dissolved if nine of the 12 clubs withdraw their participation.

With six (possibly seven) already on board, two more teams will have to bite the bullet for the European football body to celebrate success. UEFA president Aleksander Caferin has already admitted that they will be taking a case by approaching to meet their aims.

Caferin went on to add that different clubs will face different penalties depending on what their current stance is. Hopefully, United will be amongst those who will get away with a slap on their wrist, given their withdrawal.

“There is a big difference between those. But everyone will be held responsible. In what way, we will see.”

Escaping UEFA sanctions is but one thing United have to worry about. All clubs that have pulled out of the venture could face stern financial penalties if the remaining clubs seek legal proceedings based on the agreement signed by the Super League clubs.

That would maybe to some extent explain Florentino Perez’s assertions that the plan is far from dead.
