10 Manchester United players in the fray to be inducted into the Premier League hall of fame

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United players dominate the 23-man list under consideration to be inducted into the Premier League hall of fame.

It comes as no surprise given the club’s dominance of the competition. With 13 wins, no other team comes close to the Red Devils’ record in the Premier League. Chelsea lag way behind with five, a number Manchester City could equal this season.

Given our gloried record, it is imperative that a number of our players would be in contention. Some of the best footballers to grace the competition have donned the red jersey and it is time they received their due.

The list makes for familiar reading to United fans and takes them on a journey down memory lane. The likes of Roy Keane, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Peter Schmeichel, Robin Van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Owen have all made the cut.

Owen is perhaps the odd one out of the bunch. After all, the Englishman’s best days in the league came with Liverpool.

Those selected will join the likes of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Blackburn and Newcastle icon Alan Shearer, the inaugural inductees. Fans will now vote for the players they want to see inducted alongside the two from the 23-man list.

A key absentee!

Perhaps inconspicuous from the list of United players in the fray is Ryan Giggs. Ironically, the Welshman is the most successful player in the competition’s history with 13 triumphs.

The decision to exclude him comes not because of his on-field exploits but rather those off it. The 47-year-old will appear in court charged with assaulting two women and ‘controlling or coercive behaviour’ later this week.

It would be fair to assume that unless his name is cleared, he might as well forget getting himself a place among the pantheon of greats. After all, there is little one can do to defend the indefensible.

While 10 is a good start, there are still a number of players who deserve to be nominated. One man – Wayne Rooney stands out like a sore thumb. Given the Englishman’s exploits, his time too will come.
