Super League clubs including Manchester United start legal fight against FIFA and UEFA
According to Manchester Evening News, the 12 clubs committed to the European Super League, including Manchester United, have started legal proceedings against both FIFA and UEFA.
This comes after the clubs were warned of severe action if they did not back away from their proposal for the breakaway superleague.
It was confirmed earlier on Sunday that United along with a number of other top European clubs had already agreed to take part in the lucrative Super League.
Bankrolled by American financial giants JP Morgan the likes of Liverpool Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan are all involved.
UEFA has earlier warned that the clubs and players participating in the Super League would be barred from competing in existing domestic competitions as well as in international tournaments.
Super League organisers intend for the competition to run parallel to the UEFA Champions and the Europa League. However, the latter two competitions would suffer without the biggest clubs taking part in it.
The Champions League, long thought of as the premier club competition in Europe, would be akin to the Europa League as it is today. Significant, but a second-tier competition.
Protection from Vendetta!
The clubs have written to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and UEFA president Alexander Ceferin that either organization may choose to pursue punitive charges.
These clubs have hence approached the respective courts in order to protect themselves from any vindictive actions.
“Your formal statement does, however, compel us to take protective steps to secure ourselves against such an adverse reaction, which would not only jeopardize the funding commitment under the Grant but, significantly, would be unlawful.
For this reason, SLCo (Super League Company) has filed a motion before the relevant courts in order to ensure the seamless establishment and operation of the Competition in accordance with applicable laws.”
