Manchester United players hold emergency meet with Ed Woodward regarding the European Super League

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward held an emergency briefing with annoyed club stars on Monday morning, following the announcement of the European Super League.

The Red Devils are among the founding members of what could potentially be a new chapter in European football. The breakaway league has however been criticized by footballing bodies, fans and clubs not involved in the initiative.

United players too are said to be angry at the role the club played in its founding and have made it clear. The news broke out just ahead of our Premier League clash against Burnley and put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in an awkward position as he met the press.

This has led to some players believing that the Norwegian was forced to face the music while those behind it were nowhere to be seen. They have since made their feelings known as Woodward briefed them through a Zoom call at Carrington.

Woodward attempted to make his point by claiming that the club’s actions were for the best. According to the report, it does not appear to have convinced the players, who do not appear to be completely on board.

“Woodward attempted to appease them but the response was lukewarm at best. It hasn’t gone down well with many of them.”

Not afraid!

This comes just hours after star midfielder Bruno Fernandes became the first active United player to speak up against the initiative. The Portuguese sensation liked a pro-status quo post made by Daniel Podence on Instagram before going on to state that dreams cannot be bought.

Fernandes is arguably our best player and it is not a good sign that he is not on board with the club’s actions. The club’s decision is seeing opposition from both internal and external sources and it remains to be seen how it plays out.

Not only have United quit the European Club Association but Woodward has also since resigned from his UEFA posts. UEFA president Aleksander Caferin has in no uncertain terms revealed what he thought of the executives involved.

It is fair to say that even if we do back down, there will be repercussions for Woodward and co to face.
