Solskjaer leads Manchester United to first double over Burnley in 45 years

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United did not just keep their Premier League title hopes alive with the 3-1 win over Burnley.

In fact, according to Lancashire Live, the Norwegian managed to do something that none of his predecessors was able to in the last 45 years.

United’s win was the second time that we have defeated the Clarets in the league this season. The last time United did the double over the Turf Moor side was all the way back in 1975/76.

A Mason Greenwood double helped Manchester United past Burnley

Despite there being a disparity between us and them, Burnley have proven themselves to be dogged competitors. In fact, both of our wins this season have been earned.

Paul Pogba struck a wonderful goal to win it for us at Turf Moor while Mason Greenwood showed off his clinical touch to secure all three points at Old Trafford. To say Sean Dyche’s side did not make life difficult for us will be an understatement.

United’s win also puts to rest memories of the corresponding fixture last season. The Red Devils dominated proceedings but ended up losing 2-0 on the night.

While Solskjaer can take the plaudits for putting this ‘jynx’ to rest, history has been kinder to him. After all, Burnley spent 38 of the last 44 years in the lower divisions.

Sir Alex Ferguson only faced off against the Clarets in the 2009/10 season in the top-flight. While we won 3-0 at home, the reverse fixture ended up in a shock 1-0 loss.

More Manchester United News

While the double may not have won us any trophies, it will be pleasing to get that mickey off our back. Solskjaer still has much to do, but he is slowly but steadily leading us past obstacles. Bigger and better things are hopefully around the corner.
