Manchester City leading Manchester United in the pursuit of Erling Haaland
According to Spanish publication AS (h/t Express), Manchester City are leading Manchester United in the race for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.
The 20-year-old is one of the most in-demand players in European football. While United may be interested, they are not alone in seeking the Norwegian’s services.
Haaland may not have scored in the recently concluded Champions League quarter-final double-header against Manchester City. However, he did enough to leave a positive impact on Pep Guardiola. (h/t Express)
A move to City will see Haaland join up with the team his father served with distinction for three years. A defensive midfielder, Alf-Inge Haaland made 41 appearances for the Sky Blues, scoring three goals and making one assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)
United also have been hard hit by the financial aftershocks of the coronavirus pandemic. They could find it difficult to cross swords against Manchester City both in terms of transfer fee and wages offered.
The player, for his part, is keen to move to Real Madrid. Los Blancos, however, are also reeling from the financial aftershocks and would rather grab him for a reduced price next summer.
United are in the market for a striker and will need to bring in one at any cost. Anthony Martial is struggling for form while Edinson Cavani may not stay on for another season.
While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed faith in Mason Greenwood, he also believes that the youngster needs to develop further before taking over as the number nine.

Signing Haaland would be nothing short of a coup for United. The Norwegian can take over the mantle of our ace scorer for years to come and will elevate our flagging attack to the next level. Whether we will prevail in the end or not remains to be seen.
