Ex-star names the three signings that can transform Man United into title contenders

Robbie Savage names three signings that can make Manchester United title challengers

Speaking on The Weekend Preview (h/t Express), former Manchester United star Robbie Savage has named the three signings that can turn the Red Devils into title contenders.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have shown progress this season and even retain faint hopes of securing the Premier League title. However, it is not in our hands and it is evident further strengthening is required.

While Solskjaer is keen to bring in a striker and a new centre-back, Savage believes the side also needs something else in midfield. (h/t Express)

He has gone on to add that a forward thinking midfielder alongside Scott McTominay will add another dimension to the Red Devils squad.

“So if you play Fernandes as a 10, I think for United to go into that next level, when you’ve got McTominay who’s been brilliant by the way, I think they need a No 6 who can pass the ball forward and be creative.”

United have often played with a 4-2-3-1 with both Fred and McTominay anchoring the midfield. While it does offer protection to the backline, the deficiencies are easy to observe while going forward.

Bringing in a player who can pick out passes from deep could help unleash the frontline often too dependent on Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

The three musketeers?

While Fred has done well, Savage believes more is needed from the player in the position for United to challenge. Add to this a centre-half and a striker and he reckons the spine would be greatly strengthened.

“Fred’s done well but I just think in that area, for United to challenge, they need a No 9 if Cavani leaves – Cavani’s magnificent – a No 9, a No 6 and a centre-half.”

“I think if they can get those three players, especially a No 6 who can pass forward consistently, I think they’ve got a chance of competing for the title.”

The upcoming summer represents a golden opportunity for United that they should make use of. With a number of clubs needing a rebuild, we could steal a march by securing our targets early.

United have a shot at ending their four-year trophyless run by winning the Europa League this season. Success in the competition should be used as a pedestal for more to follow in the years to come.

Bringing in the right players would certainly help doing just that.
