Sir Alex Ferguson reveals he had only about four world-class players at Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson is not just one of the best managers in Manchester United history but also among the greatest managers in the history of the game.

He not just made great players but built great teams that was able to create an era of success unlike any that the club has experienced before.

According to his new book ‘Leading’ (h/t The Daily Star), he has revealed that he did so whilst having only four world-class stars at his disposal.

The Scottish tactician has coached some of the biggest names in the sport during his 27-year stint at Old Trafford.

While there were many notable names, Ferguson has named only Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes as world-class players.

“I don’t mean to demean or criticise any of the great or very good footballers who played for me during my 26-year career at United, but there were only four who were world class: Cantona, Giggs, Ronaldo and Scholes.”

Ferguson has no qualms in deciding who was the best of the lot. He went on to add that Ronaldo was easily the standout player during his time at United. Sure enough, the Portuguese superstar has since developed into one of the best players in the history of the game.

“And of the four Cristiano was like an ornament on the top of a Christmas tree.”

High standards!

We could think of a number of other players namely Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney among others who should be classified as world-class.

The fact that they are not is a testament to the high standards set by the others on Ferguson’s list. All of them played key roles in our success.
