Solskjaer hits back at Mourinho as Manchester United prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur

It will be a clash of the present and the past when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho face off against each other in the crunch clash between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

A master of the mind games, Mourinho aimed a jibe at Solskjaer’s comments regarding winning trophies. According to the Mirror, Solskjaer has now hit back by claiming that finishing second with United is nothing to be proud of.

It appears to be a jab at Mourinho finishing second to Manchester City during his second season at United. He had then claimed it to be one of his finest achievements.

“You can’t say that (finishing second) is an achievement.”

Having experienced much success as a player, Solskjaer is well aware of the tradition of winning trophies at United. Now a manager, he is keen to make Old Trafford dream again.

“Our ambition is a lot more than second place.”

The Norwegian has undoubtedly brought about a sense of stability and progress. However, he is yet to outdo what Mourinho has achieved at United.

“I said that when I wasn’t even at the club. You can never be happy with that – and we’re not.”

Quite ironically, United are now on course to finish second this season. While Solskjaer is right that we should be aiming to finish first, we are some way off overtaking the likes of Manchester City.

The Norwegian talks a good game but does often slam the drawer on his own hand.

Solskjaer would have been better off not replying to Mourinho’s jabs. Unlike the latter, the Norwegian is yet to win us any silverware and his comments although well-intentioned comes across in poor taste.

As things stand Solskjaer’s words will matter for little until he can back it up with success. Whether we will end this season with a trophy remains to be seen.
