Paul Scholes: Manchester United are willing to spend £150m for Erling Haaland
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Manchester United are willing to break the bank to land Erling Haaland.
The 20-year-old is one of the most in-demand players in world football at the moment. With a number of top teams in the fray to secure his signature, Borussia Dortmund are looking to strike gold this summer.
Valued at a mammoth £150m, Haaland is worth a king’s ransom. Scholes, however, believes United shouldn’t have a problem matching the valuation.
“I think they would. If it meant getting Haaland then why not?”
There is little doubt that Haaland is worth his weight in gold. However, given the current economical climate, not many clubs can afford to pay what Dortmund are seeking.
The very fact that neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona can cough up the cash is an indication of the times we live in. Scholes, however, goes on to add that United along with Chelsea remains the two clubs who could afford Haaland. (h/t Daily Mail)
“He’s a player United and Chelsea would be desperate for. I think they will be the two clubs who can probably afford him.”
Manchester is Red!
Scholes has also written off Manchester City making a move for Haaland. Pep Guardiola does not often use a traditional number nine and Scholes does not see the Citizens paying crazy money for a player they may not need.
“Manchester City don’t look like they want to pay that type of money. And to be fair, Guardiola barely plays with a number nine.”
Having managed Haaland at Molde, Solskjaer is aware of the youngster’s abilities and also maintains personal contact. Whether this swings the race in our favour remains to be seen.

United have not been immune to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and it remains to be seen if Scholes’ words will prove prophetic. Judging from what Ole Gunnar Solskajer has said regarding the summer business, it is fair to say that us paying up for Haaland sounds far fetched.
More so, United have a number of positions to strengthen and cannot afford to blow all their cash on one player.
