Owen Hargreaves warns Manchester United against missing out on Erling Haaland this summer
According to The Express, former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has urged the club to make a move for Erling Haaland in the summer.
The 20-year-old is one of the best young players to come out in recent years and has the potential to become a world-class star. A number of the game’s big clubs are currently vying for the Norwegian’s signature.
He will not come cheap, with Borussia Dortmund demanding at least £128.8million for his services this summer. Interestingly, Haaland does have a release clause in his contract that becomes active next year. Set at a relatively paltry £64m, it represents excellent value for money. (h/t The Express)

Given the current financial climate, it would make sense for United to wait until next summer to make their move. Hargreaves believes that would be the wrong approach to take as competition for Haaland will only increase in a year’s time.
“This guy is generational, you don’t want to lose him.”
Hargreaves believes Haaland’s decision will be influenced by which team can give him the best opportunity to further his development. Given his talent, he can have the pick of teams but finding the right one remains the challenge.
“This isn’t going to be about money, this is going to be about ‘what’s the right fit for me in my development?”

Now or never?
Joleon Lescott too agrees with Hargeaves and believes it makes little sense to wait until next summer when the player can be brought now.
“You’re not going to go into an auction next year when it’s capable for more teams to buy him.”
The need for urgency is understandable given the potential Haaland has displayed. Players of his calibre do not come often and United will do well to land him. Whether our financial standing will permit us to do that remains to be seen.
