Diogo Dalot set for Manchester United return once AC Milan loan ends

According to CalcioMercato, Manchester United loanee Diogo Dalot is set to return to the club once his spell at AC Milan comes to an end.

The 22-year-old joined the Italian giants on a season-long loan last summer. He has received decent game time but still lags behind Theo Hernandez in the Milan pecking order.

Dalot played in both the Europa League games against United in the previous round. While he impressed at Old Trafford, he endured a night to forget in the return leg.

There is no clause in Dalot’s contract that places Milan with an obligation to sign the player permanently. They have no choice but to meet United’s evaluation to land the full-back on a permanent basis.

It was reported earlier this week that Milan are on the lookout for alternatives to Dalot. That now appears to be the case, with the player’s time at the San Siro winding down.

With his contract running until 2023, Dalot still has two years left at United. The Red Devils are on the lookout for a new right-back to compete with Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Interestingly, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to rule out a future for the Portuguese star at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer refused to close the door on Dalot at United

While the likes of Brandon Williams, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe can all play right-back, none of them are specialists in the position.

Solskjaer already admitted that United will need to be smart in the coming window. With a number of positions to be strengthened, the club will do well to maximize the resources already at their disposal.

It is very unlikely that Dalot will become the first-choice right-back for us. However, he is a decent backup and might just fulfil that role, freeing up money to be used elsewhere.
