Butt was an academy graduate at United and went on to represent us with distinction for 12 years from 1992 to 2004. Returning as a coach in 2012, he served as interim manager for the United Under-23s before taking over as the head of first-team development in 2019. A role he left just last month.
Under his tutelage, several academy stars went on to represent the first-team. He oversaw the progress of current first-team stars such as Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay, Dean Henderson and Axel Tuanzebe.
Butt’s departure came in the wake of two key appointments – Football Director John Murtough and Technical Director Darren Fletcher. It was a surprise to know that he would not be a part of the club moving forwards.
“Now for him to abruptly leave it means that, and I’m reading between the lines, he didn’t agree with the appointments that have been made“
Fry’s comments go well with what was suggested by The Athleticlast month. The report suggested that Murtough’s appointment directly impacted Butt’s departure.
As someone who has given much to the club, it is sad to see Butt leave in such acrimonious circumstances. While the likes of Murtough and Fletcher may have the club’s best interests at heart, it remains to be questioned if the matter could not have been resolved amicably.
“It’s sad really because he’s given a lot on and off the field to the club.”
The Red Devils have lost a key piece in their management team and it now remains to be seen who will replace him.
