Ian Wright lavishes praise on Manchester United star Luke Shaw
Speaking on Match of the Day (h/t The Mirror), Ian Wright believes Luke Shaw was the best player for Manchester United against Brighton.
The Red Devils returned to Premier League action with a 2-1 win over the Seagulls at Old Trafford yesterday night. Goals from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood saw United overturn Danny Welbeck’s opener for the visitors.
While there were a number of players who stepped up their game in the second half, Wright believes one amongst them stands out.
The 25-year-old Shaw has enjoyed possibly his best season yet in a United jersey. With six assists and one goal in 37 appearances, he has been one of our standout performers this campaign. (h/t Transfermarkt)
“It’s a great ball too from Luke Shaw who, for me, was easily the Man of the Match for Manchester United. So in the end, United’s quality came through.”
Defensively solid and excellent on the overlap, Shaw was excellent at both ends of the pitch. Whilst not direct, he still played a major role in the buildup to our winner.
What he does best!
Wright also made a point to praise the role Donny van de Beek played in Greenwood’s winner. The Dutchman has endured a difficult debut season but came off the bench to great effect last night.
“He’s come from a possession-based academy, that’s what he does. He makes movement. It’s great movement and leaves the space open to Bruno Fernandes.”
With the season drawing to a close, it remains to be seen if Van de Beek can end it with a bang.

Shaw’s performances have not gone unnoticed this season. Gareth Southgate even called up him for England’s World Cup qualifiers in the recently concluded international break.
His career now appears to be back on track and hopefully, he will go on to fulfill the potential he showed early in his career.
