Solskjaer hints that David de Gea will return as the main man at Manchester United
According to The Express, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opened up on the situation surrounding David de Gea.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club in the summer. Speculation rose to a crescendo after he was also omitted for our win against Brighton last night.
Solskjaer has however gone on to say that De Gea will return to the line-up soon.
“He’ll definitely play football for us again.”
De Gea was absent for our previous six games prior to yesterday after returning to Spain for the birth of his child. Henderson stepped in for the Spaniard during his absence and held himself to a high standard.
De Gea has not played for the club in a while and it is possible that Solskjaer went with Henderson given that the Englishman had momentum.
“David de Gea spent a while back home and then he had internationals so he hadn’t played for about a month.”
The 24-year-old is a capable player in his own right and has been pushing for the starting spot. Whether this is an actual change of the guard remains to be seen.
End of an era
De Gea is the club’s top earner and has been at the club for a decade now. During that time, he has been one of our best performers and amongst the top players in his position in the world.
He has however made a few uncharacteristic errors in the last few seasons. With Henderson impressing, the time may finally be ripe for a change. De Gea is also United’s top earner and selling him would free up a significant chunk of our wage bill.
Along with Phil Jones, David de Gea is one of the last players left at United from the Sir Alex Ferguson era. His sale would close the book on a glorious chapter in the club’s history.
