Player News: Manchester United to offer Luke Shaw a new contract
According to the Mirror, Manchester United are set to reward left-back Luke Shaw with a new contract.
The 25-year-old has been one of our standout players this season. With one goal and six assists in 35 appearances, he is an easy selection for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make.
Shaw’s performances have also caught the attention of Gareth Southgate. The England boss rewarded the defender with an England recall for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland.
Shaw arrived at United in 2014 to much hype. However a loss of form and a spate of injuries have seen him struggle to impress.
He has enjoyed better luck on both fronts this season and looks to be getting better and better. The 25-year-old is arguably having his best season in a Red shirt and has repaid Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him.
Shaw still has two years to run on his current deal at United. He is seen as a major part of Solskjaer’s plans going forward and the club is keen to see it reflect in an improved wage package.
Real or illusion?
As things stand, Shaw earns £150,000 per week and is the club’s ninth-highest earner. Interestingly he is already the second-best paid left-back in the league and comes in joint seventh across all defenders.
While it is good to reward success, United will be better served to wait before offering Shaw improved terms. After all, rather than overreaching, he is just justifying the amount we have been paying him for some time now.
To put things into perspective the much-maligned Trent Alexander-Arnold who is having a horrendous season only trails the United ace by a solitary assist, having played a game less.

Shaw deserves plaudits for improving his performances this season. However, given his ability and the faith the club has shown in him, it is about time he delivered.
Hopefully, this isn’t a flash in the pan and he will continue to improve and get better.
