Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confident of his team’s Europa League chances as Manchester United beat AC Milan
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Express) after the win against AC Milan, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stated his confidence in his team’s Europa League aspirations.
The Norwegian oversaw a 1-0 win at San Siro on Thursday that saw United beat AC Milan 2-1 on aggregate. That takes the Red Devils into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League, where we face Granada.
United were bland throughout the game when it came to creating clear-cut chances but our defence stood tall and protected a 1-0 lead handed by a Paul Pogba goal in the 48th minute.
And Solskjaer acknowledged how ‘difficult’ the tie was against the Serie A side as he highlighted the importance of keeping a clean sheet in such close games.
“We’ve come through a very difficult tie against a fantastic club and we’ve overcome some difficulties. You give yourself a chance to win a game of football when you keep a clean sheet.”
Going all the way
The former Cardiff City boss said that his team feels ‘confident’ and is ready to take on whichever team is there. He did, however, acknowledge the uncertainty and drama of knockout cup competitions.
“There are many good teams left but you’ve got to be spot on. It’s a cup competition and anything can happen. But we are through and we feel confident.”
United last won the competition in 2017 under current Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho. And we won at this stage last year, as Solskjaer led the club to a quarter-final win against Danish side FC Copenhagen.
