Transfer News: Juan Mata set to end his Manchester United stay this summer
According to the latest transfer news coming out of Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United have made a decision on the future of Juan Mata.
The 32-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Chelsea in 2014. He has since been a key member of our first-team squad.
Not a young player anymore, age is catching up with the Spanish international. He is not a major part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans and can be considered expendable by the club.
According to the report, Mata is behind both Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek in the United pecking order. Considering that the latter himself is struggling for game time, Mata’s situation cannot be clearer.
The Red Devils need to strengthen multiple positions this summer. With money not freely available, funds will need to be raised through sales.
Mata’s contract at the club expires this summer. The Red Devils do however have the option to extend it by another year. Doing so would help retain his value in the market.
Mata is keen to return to his homeland and embark upon a new challenge in his career. Several La Liga sides are interested in the player.
Real Sociedad, Real Betis and Mata’s former side Valencia are all keen on the player. The Spaniard made a name for himself at Valencia before leaving for Chelsea in 2011. Ten years on, with his career entering its twilight years, a return to familiar grounds could be on the cards.
