Transfer News: Manchester United will need to pay an ‘astronomical’ fee to land Edmond Tapsoba

According to German news outlet RP online, Manchester United will have to part ways with a king’s ransom for the transfer of Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba.

Leverkusen snapped up the defender from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes for a sizable fee in January last year. He has since emerged as a major force for the Germans and is now an automatic first choice in the playing XI.

The Red Devils are in the market for a new centre-back ahead of the summer window. Tapsoba is pacy and good on the ball, making himself an excellent candidate to partner Harry Maguire.

While United’s interest is no secret, more clubs are being alerted to the 22-year-old’s abilities at Leverkusen. The report goes on to add that it is very unlikely that he will be on the move anytime soon.

With Sven Bender and brother Lars Bender retiring and Jonathan Tah having made it clear he wants a move away, Leverkusen would loathe to part ways with Tapsoba.

The Burkina Faso international is the ideal candidate to rebuild their defence around and they would consider letting him go if an irrefutable offer is made.

Given the financial implications of the Covid-19 pandemic, it stands to reason that United will not pay crazy amounts of money to land a player. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently admitted that the club will have to act responsibly in the transfer market.

Given his claims, it is difficult to see us go all out to land Tapsoba, at least this summer.

It is believed that Tapsoba has a release clause of around £44m in his contract. He has made 30 appearances for the Germans this season, scoring two goals. (h/t Transfermarkt)
