Fernandes joined the Red Devils for an initial £46.6m from the Portuguese club. It could rise to £67.8m if all his performance clauses are met. They are due a £4.2m pay-out if he either wins the PFA Player of the Year award or finishes in the top three for the Ballon d’Or while at the club.

With him the bookies favourite for the former, there is every chance he could end up winning the prestigious trophy.

Sporting has already received £8.4m in bonus clauses from United. Given that he has been here just over a year at United, it is a testament to the impact he has had at Old Trafford.

Fernandes could very well make history of he overtakes Salah in the race for the PL golden boot. No midfielder in the history of the competition has won the award. It could very well be yet another milestone for the Red Devils number 18.
