It is no secret that Manchester United and Solskjaer are in need of a new centre-back next summer. The defence has proven to be our Achilles heel and it needs to be addressed if we are serious about challenging for the title.

According to the Daily Star, club legend Paul Parker wants Manchester United to bring in not one but two centre-backs next summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also looking to bring in a defender and is keen to sign a partner for skipper Harry Maguire.

“Despite the position they find themselves in the Premier League, they still need to strengthen in the transfer market this summer.”

Parker however believes the Norwegian’s approach will only address a part of the problem. He is also keen to see the club bring in a player who can replace the English international.

“People talk about bringing in a new partner for Harry Maguire, but I would look at bringing in two centre backs.”

The United legend is not wrong in his assessment. After all, Maguire has done precious little to lay a direct claim to being an automatic starter irrespective of his form.

Parker believes Maguire is a part of the problem and is more a liability himself. The world’s most expensive defender, he has done little to justify that price tag.

“Maguire is not a leader, he plays the game for himself, he sits way too deep, he dribbles for the sake of dribbling and runs himself into cul-de-sacs.”

Parker’s observations may not be far from the truth. To put things into perspective, United have conceded just two goals lesser than Liverpool, a team who have largely played with midfielders in defence.

Maguire is far from the defensive colossus we need, but it would appear that he continues to dodge criticism and is not often held accountable.

As long as United continue to believe he isn’t a part of the problem, we might find it difficult to nip it on the bud.
