Jamie Carragher praises Manchester United for being ‘brave’ against Chelsea
According to Sky Sports (h/t The Mirror), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United were brave in their match against Chelsea.
The Red Devils played out a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge last weekend, a match that caught the headlines for the referee’s antics rather than that of the players.
Despite not really creating much otherwise, Carragher believes there were signs of encouragement. He felt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were on top and shown more intent than they would have under Jose Mourinho.
“I thought they were very brave. On the front foot, pressing, man to man all over the pitch.”
“I think this was one of the bravest and most on the front foot I have seen Manchester United without the ball. I thought they were very brave in this game.”
While Carragher’s comments on us being on the front foot are debatable, it makes more sense once he compares it to Mourinho’s defensive approach.
The Portuguese manager deploys his teams to drop deep when not in position. Doing so invites pressure from the opposition and ridicule from fans, especially at a club such as United, who have historically deployed attacking football.
The jury is still out
Carragher also went on to add that it was United’s lack of quality that saw them fail to drive home the advantage against Chelsea.
“I actually think it’s a quality issue.”
The Red Devils have shown fight and promise under Solskjaer but are yet to drive home that advantage into something tangible. One would assume that the jury will be out on the Norwegian until he breaks his trophy duck as a manager at Old Trafford.
