Manchester United clarify the comments made by Luke Shaw regarding referee Stuart Attwell
According to The Metro, Manchester United have clarified what could have been a blockbuster set of revelations made by defender Luke Shaw.
United and Chelsea played out a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge, a match where we were denied a legitimate penalty by referee Stuart Attwell after Callum Hudson-Odoi handled the ball. The decision taken by him following a VAR check annoyed the United squad, who felt hard done by the call.
While Solskjaer was visibly annoyed in his post-match presser with Sky Sports (h/t The Metro), it was in fact Shaw who dropped the potential bomb.
The United star suggested that Attwell chose to take the easy route out in order to avoid any controversy. He went on to add that the referee admitted to skipper Harry Maguire that he believed the incident warranted a penalty but chose against giving it.
“The referee even said to H [Harry Maguire], I heard him say: “If I say it’s a pen then it’s going to cause a lot of talk about it after.” So I don’t know what happened there.”
Shaw’s revelations may have landed Attwell in hot soup if there was any semblance of truth to it. However, the club has moved quickly to play down the comments.
Lost in translation!
According to Sky Sports (h/t The Metro), United revealed that Shaw has no malicious intent by his comments. They also went on to add that the English ace had misheard the conversation between Attwell and Maguire.
The club’s stance is understandable given the lack of evidence to collaborate Shaw’s comments. With the game already over, we will do well to focus on the ones to come than stick to the past.

While players have every right to be annoyed by the result, they will do well not to court controversy without substantial proof to back their claims.
Shaw has been one of our best players this season and it will not do him any good to be bogged down by what was, in all honesty, a really poor call.
