Paul Scholes names Manchester United as Europa League favourites
According to The Metro, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has tipped the Red Devils to go on and win the Europa League this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side played out a 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad yesterday night at Old Trafford. We could afford to lower the intensity given the 4-0 away win from the first leg.
With us now in the last 16, the showpiece event at the Stadio Energa in Gdansk appears one step closer. It is the competition’s 50th-year in existence and the Red Devils could round off the special moment by etching their name on the trophy.
“I fancy United surprisingly enough.”

Scholes believes United have the best squad in the competition and have every chance of ending their four-year trophy drought.
“Man United have the best squad and the best team left in the competition.”
Other top teams in the competition are Arsenal, Tottenham, AC Milan, Ajax and Roma. We clearly hold an edge over them in terms of quality, and the onus is on the manager and players to drive home that advantage.
“Manchester United are much better than Arsenal and Tottenham.”

Nothing to fear
Scholes has downplayed the threat posed by the Italian and Spanish teams and has fully backed United to go all the way.
“Of course I would [fancy United against anyone left]. Italian football, Spanish football is nowhere near as good as it used to be. Milan are top of the league, I think United would cruise past Milan.”
He admits that a matchup against Scottish giants Rangers would make for an interesting clash but the Red Devils should have no problem in seeing off Steven Gerrard and his men.

United fell short at the semifinal stage of the competition last season. With a less stellar opposition this time around, we are expected to go on and win the competition.
Incidentally, United’s last trophy was the Europa League in 2017. Securing it once again to break the four-year drought would be poetic.
