Rio Ferdinand gives a damning verdict on Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire

Speaking on the Five Youtube channel, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has given his verdict on Harry Maguire and his England prospects.

The Red Devils skipper is a sure starter for both clubb and country when fit. Heading into the summer’s Euros, one would be forgiven for thinking Maguire is nailed on to start for the Three Lions.

Ferdinand, however, disagrees and believes that England have better options available.

Ferdinand believes former Manchester United ace Michael Keane deserves to start over Maguire. The 28-year-old has been impressive for Everton this season and has improved under Carlo Ancelotti.

“On form Michael Keane all day. There wouldn’t be a person in the country who is watching Premier League games week-in-week-out who would tell you Maguire is more consistent than Michael Keane at the moment. Not a chance.”

Ferdinand went on to add that if anyone deserves a nailed on spot in defence, it is Manchester City star John Stones. Given his current form, the United legend believes Keane trumps Maguire.

“And in terms of form, Maguire seems not be in great form at the moment.”

Maguire on his day is a good defender, but his weakness is quite glaring. None more so than his lack of pace. The 27-year-old is slow on the turn.

While he may not get as much slack as his United teammates, he too has contributed much to our defensive frailties this season.

Maguire should step up his game to perform at the level expected of him. While his spot for England does not appear to be at risk, his performances could be scrutinized if they aren’t up to the mark.

Both United and England will hope the 27-year-old can rise to the occasion in the coming months.
