Atletico Madrid ace Luis Suarez reveals he could not have joined Manchester United
Speaking to France Football (h/t The Mirror), Atletico Madrid star Luis Suarez has revealed that he had a clause in his contract that prevented him from signing for Manchester United.
The 34-year-old left Barcelona after six successful seasons last summer to join local rivals Atletico Madrid. For a player who scored loads of goals, the Catalans ensured the Uruguayan got the short end of the stick.
Suarez was deemed too old to be useful and was unceremoniously discarded in the summer. He has since gone on to make a mockery of that claim at Atletico and currently has a 0.93 strike rate in the league this season.
The Uruguayan has so far scored 16 goals and assisted two in just 24 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side. All of his strikes have come in the league, leaving him on top of the scoring charts alongside former teammate Lionel Messi. (h/t Transfermarkt)
United were one of the clubs that Suarez was not allowed to join. Others on the list include Real Madrid and PSG. How much interest the Red Devils had in him is debatable but for sure, he could not have joined us.
We have instead brought in Suarez’s international strike partner Edinson Cavani. While he may not be as prolific as the Atletico star, he has lived up to expectations.
An unviable union to begin with!
Any move for Suarez would have raised a number of eyebrows at Old Trafford. Not only is he a former Liverpool player, but his racism incident with Patrice Evra has left quite a blot on the sport.
Given the vociferous support Evra received from United players and fans alike, even the thought of imagining Suarez in a United jersey should amount to treason.

Despite our feelings about Suarez, there is little doubt that Barcelona should have treated him better, especially so given that he is the club’s second-highest goalscorer in history (joint).
The very fact that he was hounded out of the club shows the moral bankruptcy that has engulfed what was once a premier footballing institution.
