Manchester United star David de Gea a target for Italian champions Juventus

According to Fichajes via Calciomercato, Manchester United star David de Gea has emerged as a transfer target for Italian champions Juventus heading into the summer transfer window.

The 30-year-old has been at the club for almost 10 years now and has been the overwhelming first choice in goal. During this time, he has won 433 caps for United, keeping 152 clean sheets in the process. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Once the best goalkeepers in the world, a spate of errors in recent seasons have seen his stock fall. The return of Dean Henderson last summer has also added its own pressure on the Spaniard.

The Spaniard has a bigger reputation and it is only natural that he has garnered much interest. Apart from Juventus, the likes of Bayern Munich, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain are all keeping tabs on the player.

In Wojciech Szczesny, the Old Lady already possesses one of the best goalkeepers on the continent. While the Polish international is certainly capable, De Gea is ultimately an upgrade.

More of the same?

According to Juve FC, it would appear that De Gea may not join Juventus as an automatic first choice. He is likely to compete with the options already at Turin as Andrea Pirlo looks to ensure the Old Lady continue their dominance.

If that is the case, De Gea would be better off moving elsewhere. 30 is a young age for a goalkeeper and the Spaniard has a number of years left at the top.

Only Peter Schmeichel has outperformed De Gea at United in the Premier League era

Only three other goalkeepers have had more clean sheets than De Gea in Untied’s history. Of them, only Peter Schmeichel has served in the Premier League era.

Letting De Gea move on would help us install Henderson as our first-choice goalkeeper for years to come. Whether the Englishman lives up to the hype remains to be seen.
