Man United make transfer decision on key position ahead of the summer window

Manchester United willing to part ways with David de Gea or Dean Henderson come summer

According to The Sun, Manchester United are ready to part ways with either David de Gea or Dean Henderson in the upcoming summer transfer window.

De Gea is the club’s first-choice keeper and has been so for the better part of a decade. He might have had his ups and downs but is largely dependable. Henderson, on the other hand, is the future and could fulfil that destiny as early as next season.

While the competition for places is good, too much of it could also be harmful. It appears to be a case of just that with things not all right behind the scenes. United are ready to get rid of one of them, even if it is on a temporary basis.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to bring in a talented goalkeeper who wouldn’t be frustrated by being the second-choice. According to the report, it is likely that Henderson could be moved on if he continues to be unhappy being the backup.

The 23-year-old is keen to gain regular playtime. He is intent on earning more international caps but will find it difficult to do that if he stays on the bench.

While De Gea is the obvious choice to continue in goal, he is now 30 and will need to be moved on in a few years. Henderson, meanwhile, has years left in his locker and could nail down the goalkeeping spot for the better part of a decade.

A positional purge?

It appears to be a summer of change at United, especially in the goalkeeping department. The Red Devils are stacked in the position and are currently spending over £600,000 per week on goalkeepers’ wages.

The likes of Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira, Under-23 custodian Paul Woolston and veteran 38-year-old Lee Grant are all on course to leave the club at the end of the season. Grant, however, looks set to return as a coach. (h/t Manchester Evening News)

Both De Gea and Henderson are excellent keepers and it would be ideal if we could have both. However, that does not appear to be the case and a call will need to be made. On what criteria the decision will be made remains to be seen.
