Paul Scholes: Mason Greenwood can be the striker Manchester United seek
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Mirror), Paul Scholes has backed Mason Greenwood to be the solution Manchester United are seeking upfront.
Anthony Martial ended last season in top form and appeared to have established himself as the club’s first-choice striker. He has, however, failed to live up to the standards and has struggled for goals.
The signing of Edinson Cavani has given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer another option to call upon. While the Uruguayan has largely delivered, at 34 he is far from the long-term solution United seek.
Solskjaer has used Marcus Rashford up top, however, the youngster does lack the clinical edge expected of a top-class frontman. Scholes believes it is between Rashford and Greenwood with the latter getting the nod.
“It’s between Rashford and Greenwood who plays in that centre forward role.”
Greenwood is arguably a much deadlier finisher and could prove to be the answer to ur problem. It will also permit Rashford to be deployed on the left where he usually thrives.
“I think the club and everybody thinks Greenwood is the best finisher at the club so therefore he would be better as the No9.”
A new era!
The 19-year-old penned a new deal at United just this week. With his future at the club secure until at least 2025, the time has come for the second phase of his development.
Scholes believes Greenwood is destined for greatness and he can achieve that at United. The youngster has had a rather underwhelming season but has time on his hands to fulfil Scholes’ expectations.
“Give Greenwood chances he will score. He is destined to be a superstar.”
