Gary Neville backs Donny van de Beek to succeed at Manchester United

Donny van de Beek was arguably the biggest signing made by Manchester United last summer.

The Dutch midfielder arrived at Old Trafford, having established himself as a key player at Ajax Amsterdam. Also a regular for the Netherlands national team, it is fair to say that expectations were high.

He got off to a bright start and scored on his debut against Crystal Palace. That was as good as it got and he is still waiting for his second United goal. (h/t Transfermarkt)

To be fair to the 23-year-old, opportunities have been hard to come by at the Theatre of Dreams. He has made just two Premier League starts all season and has predominantly spent time on the bench.

This has done little to dissuade Gary Neville. Speaking on the Webby and O’Neil channel on Youtube, he has backed the Dutchman to go on and succeed at the club.

“I think he’ll be a brilliant player for United because I think he’s a brilliant player, but I don’t think we’ve seen it yet.”

Neville also expressed his sympathy for the midfielder and his situation. It is not every day that you come in for big money and sit on the bench.

The United legend for one cannot think of a precedent that mirrors the Dutchman’s situation. However, he remains confident that the transfer will come good with time.

“I’ve not seen that happen before at Manchester United, they’ve bought a player for so much, so highly-rated and he’s just been left completely on the bench. I think he’ll come good.”

Van de Beek played a key role in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semifinal in 2019. A proven player at the highest level, it will be a travesty if he is wasted at United.

Hopefully, Neville will be proved a prophet and the 23-year-old will come good.
