Upamecano deal could lead to domino effect that Man United could take advantage of

Does Dayot Upamecano moving to Bayern pave the way for Manchester United to sign David Alaba?

Bayern Munich star David Alaba is one of the players linked with Manchester United heading into the summer transfer window.

The Austrian superstar is in the prime of his career and a fine footballer adept in a variety of positions. It is not often that a player of his quality becomes available on the Bosman market and as expected, there are a number of suitors.

Alaba’s departure would leave Die Roten short of a defender heading into next season. However, they have moved with brutal German efficiency to address it ahead of its time.

Manchester United have missed out on Dayot Upamecano

According to ESPN, Bayern have won the race for Dayot Upamecano. The RB Leipzig star had also courted interest from United and is one of the top young prospects in European football.

He would be an ideal replacement for Alaba and can readily slot in at centre-back. With Jerome Boateng also on his way out, Niklas Sule and Upamecano could be the future of the Bayern defence.

Alaba looked to be on his way to Real Madrid. However, according to the Telegraph (Subscription Required), a lack of progress on that front could see either United or Chelsea make a move for the 28-year-old.

A switch to the Premier League has not been ruled out. It is believed that Chelsea are leading the race to land the player should he come to England. (h/t Express)

Chelsea are hesitant to make a bid given Alaba’s exorbitant wage demands. United making a move will also need us to break our wage bill. As things stand, David de Gea is the club’s top earner at £375,000 per week.

With a lucrative new deal in the pipeline for Bruno Fernandes, it remains to be seen if United are willing to bet big on Alaba.
