Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes opens up on playing in front of empty crowds
Manchester United hit the jackpot when they signed Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon back in January 2020.
The Portuguese international has since emerged as the Red Devils’ key player. Fernandes has been central to our development under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his presence on the pitch has a visible impact.
With 30 goals and 20 assists in 56 appearances, the 26-year-old has given United fans much to cheer about. However, with football taking place in front of empty crowds, most fans have been treated to the player’s magic over the television.
Fernandes remains undaunted and continues to play as if the crowds are in attendance. According to the club’s official website, he admits that he tries to celebrate every good moment as if he is in the midst of the United fans.
“We have to make our own way to celebrate and make the atmosphere happy when we score as if the fans were there.”
The 26-year-old’s actions will please fans who were keen for him to celebrate as if they were in attendance. It is easy to see why the midfielder is a fan favourite.
“One of the things the fans told me when we started to play behind closed doors is that when we score you need to celebrate like we are there with you.”
Missing out on the dream
Fernandes has played in front of the adoring United crowd just four times since joining the club. He expressed his regret for not being able to do so more and also being robbed of the magical Old Trafford experience.
“Coming to the Premier League and coming to play for Manchester United, the atmosphere of the game day, I’m not living that at all.”
Fans, however, have shown their support to the player off the pitch. He has an adoring social media following and is also well met on the streets. While he is grateful for such small mercies, he would like nothing better than for fans to return to the Theatre of Dreams.
