Manchester United equal 109-year club record with FA Cup win vs West Ham
The midweek win against West Ham United was the ninth consecutive FA Cup home win for Manchester United – a club record. According to OptaJoe on Twitter, it is a run they last put together 109 years ago.
Manchester United dominated proceedings against West Ham United but failed to break the deadlock against the Hammers in normal time.
Substitute Scott McTominay’s well taken effort in the first half of extra time proved to be the difference on the night. It also saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side enter the history books.
The original record was set over a course of four years from 1908-1912. Interestingly, United won the trophy just once during that period.
Solskjaer’s side have made it a habit of breaking records in recent times. The Red Devils equalled the biggest victory margin in the Premier League with the 9-0 demolition of Southampton earlier this month.
While records are well and good, it amounts to little unless it leads to silverware. United have now gone four years with a trophy and will need to deliver sooner than later.
The win against the Hammers took United to the last eight of the competition. Having fallen at the semifinal stage last time around, they will be keen to do better this season.
The draw for the quarterfinal will be held on Thursday. Getting drawn at home will give Solskjaer an opportunity to make the aforementioned record his own.
