Marcos Rojo discovered his Manchester United exit on social media
According to ESPN, Marcos Rojo discovered his Manchester United exit on social media before being intimated personally by the club.
The club had the option of extending the Argentine’s contract by a year until 2022. Rojo does not appear to be privy to negotiations and found out about the club’s decision when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed it in a press conference on 30 January.
Rojo has since joined Argentine giants Boca Junior as he attempts to get his career back on track. Brought to Old Trafford by Louis van Gaal in 2014, the 30-year-old made 122 appearances for the club in his six-and-a-half-year stay.
The defender signed his last contract in 2018 but has since been a largely peripheral figure. He had fallen out of favour with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and started just five Premier League games under the Norwegian.
The club’s decision to terminate Rojo’s contract comes as no big surprise. There was no point in keeping on a player who did not feature in our plans. It could, however, have been dealt with more sensitivity, regardless of the player’s impact at the club.
A lack of sensitivity!
United’s handling of the departure is in contrast to how they welcomed Bruno Fernandes to the club last January. The Red Devils had a birthday cake ready for his daughter Matilde, as the Portuguese star and his entourage flew down to Carrington to sign the deal. (h/t The Athletic) (Subscription Required)
This kind of sensitivity is what fans like us associate with the club. It was unfortunately lacking when it came to Rojo’s departure. The player, to his credit, penned a heartfelt goodbye message to fans once his move to Boca had been finalised.

While his adventure with United may have come to an end, there is still some football left in the 30-year-old. With the Copa America set to be held this year, the Argentine now has an opportunity to play himself into contention for La Albiceleste‘s squad for the tournament.
