Solskjaer reveals why Manchester United youngsters Teden Mengi and Facundo Pellistri were sent out on loan
Speaking to MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained that Facundo Pellistri and Teden Mengi were sent on loan to gain more experience for the future.
The 19-year-old Uruguayan winger joined Spanish side Deportivo Alaves on loan last month. The United manager says there were plenty of offers but a move to Spain seemed best for Pellistri’s development.
“That was a good option. He felt comfortable and confident going there, so hopefully he will get some important match minutes in a good league.”
The Norwegian implies that the former Penarol man has taken big strides in training, and a move to La Liga could be the next step before his debut at Manchester United.
They could use the experience
As for Mengi, he joined Derby County on loan in the January transfer window. The Championship side are managed by former United striker Wayne Rooney.
And Solskjaer believes that a move to a competitive league such as the Championship would prepare the 18-year-old centre-back for the physicality in the top divisions.
“To play in the Championship is a great challenge for Teden. That is going to be good for him. Wayne has been a top striker and I’m sure he will go in there and show him a few things himself.”
Both Mengi and Pellistri were a regular feature for the club in Premier League 2 this season. Going out to play regularly in challenging leagues will no doubt add to their experience.
