Odion Ighalo leaves Manchester United for Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab
According to Sky Sports, Odion Ighalo is on his way to Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab after his loan at Manchester United expired last week.
The Nigerian spent a year on loan at Old Trafford. He initially played an important role, even scoring key goals in last season’s Europa League run. However, this season has been a different story.
Having signed Edinson Cavani in the summer, Ighalo was largely the forgotten man at Old Trafford. The 31-year-old had made just four appearances all season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Rather than return to Shanghai Shenhua, Ighalo will now make a permanent switch to Al-Shabab. The move is subject to medical and personal terms being agreed.
The transfer window in Saudi runs until February 7, giving them enough time to work out a deal.
The spell at United was a dream come true for the Red Devils fan. He penned an emotional letter to the fans on his Instagram account upon his departure. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
Ighalo was never going to be anything more than a stop-gap measure. For all his effort and passion, the Nigerian is, unfortunately, a limited player.
He pales in comparison to the likes of Cavani and it made sense for United to not pursue an extension to his loan deal.
