Crystal Palace eye Manchester United outcast Sergio Romero
According to Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness, Crystal Palace are keeping tabs on Manchester United outcast Sergio Romero.
The 33-year-old joined the club in 2015 during the reign of Louis van Gaal. A perennial understudy to David de Gea, Romero established himself as one of the best backup keepers in the business.
He has however fallen from grace and is not a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans. Moreover, Romero has not trained with the club since the start of 2021. Instead, he is training in Buenos Aires ahead of the Copa America scheduled to take place next summer. (h/t MEN)
Romero has made it no secret that he is keen to quit Old Trafford in search of regular football. Ironically, United’s Europea League opponents could be the ones to help him out of the Theatre of Dreams.
This is thanks to their interest in Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. The Eagles are ready to replace the Spaniard with Romero should the need arise.
Palace could also decide to make do with Jack Butland, who joined the club in the summer of 2020.
Romero’s last club appearance came during last season’s Europa League quarter-final clash against FC Copenhagen in August 2020. With his future at the club done, it makes sense for the player to leave.
The prospect of garnering regular game time ahead of the Copa America will also boost his chances of making the Argentina squad.
