Edinson Cavani told Bruno Fernandes how to beat Alisson Becker
Speaking to the BBC (h/t The Daily Mail), Bruno Fernandes has credited Manchester United teammate Edinson Cavani for giving him decisive information in the lead-up to his free-kick.
The 26-year-old’s strike from the edge of the box left Alisson Becker with no chance, giving United the lead for the second time on the night. It was something they would not relinquish as the game ended 3-2.
While Fernandes may have been the executioner, Cavani was the brain behind it. The Uruguayan star did not just give the 26-year-old golden advice but also won the freekick that led up to that moment.
“Cavani told me to have one on the side of the keeper and it went in well.”
As someone who has faced Alisson more at the international level, Cavani will have done his research on the Brazilian custodian.
His advice was worth its weight in gold yesterday. The win wasn’t just another step in our quest to win the FA Cup but a statement that we are the real deal.
Fernandes for his part is happy to have scored, but believes the bigger story is the team emerging victorious.
“I’m happy cause we win nothing more. Doesn’t matter who scores, if I score I’m happy.”
Team comes first!
Fernandes went on to praise both sides for their performances in the game. The goal-fest was in stark contrast to the goalless draw at Anfield just a week ago.
The 26-year-old believes United’s approach of pressing Liverpool more yielded benefits at Old Trafford. He is not wrong as two turnovers caused by Paul Pogba led to United scoring their first two goals of the night.
While the game was closer than it seemed, Fernandes’ goal ensured we got our first win against Liverpool under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
