Bayern Munich declare interest in Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano
Speaking on Bild Live (h/t The Daily Mail), Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that the Bavarians will rival Manchester United for Dayot Upamecano.
The 22-year-old Frenchman is one of the best young defenders in Europe. He has emerged as a key part of an RB Leipzig side that has impressed under Julian Nagelsmann.
With David Alaba set to leave the Bavarians in the summer, Rummenigge is keen to bring in Upamecano to the Allianz Arena.
Upamecano is a player of great potential who made his France national team bow last year. It is a testament to his ability that he could break into the World champions’ squad.
Despite signing a new contract with Leipzig last summer, he is expected to move on at the end of the season. The defender has a relatively modest £38million release clause, making him nothing short of a steal.
It is not just Bayern who are keen to strengthen their defence in the summer. Other interested parties such as Chelsea and Real Madrid are also in need of able centre-backs.
A weak spot
United for their part lack a dependable player who can play alongside skipper Harry Maguire at the back. Victor Lindelof has been used regularly alongside the skipper with mixed results.
While Eric Bailly has shown recently that he could offer a viable solution, the Ivorian’s injury record is sketchy at best. The lack of a second solid centre-back is, for now, a glaring weakness in our arsenal.
Given the concerns, it is clear why Upamecano is highly sought-after. He is the obvious name for a side looking to bring in young defensive talent. With so many teams in the fray, reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano believes the decision could very well come down to the player.

Signing Upamecano would be nothing short of a statement. The Frenchman could go on to secure the United rearguard for years to come. He has all the makings to become our next great defensive colossus.
Whether we can beat off competition for him remains to be seen.
