Jurgen Klopp reveals why he rejected approach from Manchester United before he took Liverpool job
Speaking on ‘talk with legends’ charity event (h/t Mirror), Jurgen Klopp revealed that he rejected an approach from Manchester United long before he took the job at Liverpool.
The German took over the helm at Liverpool from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015. Earlier that year, Klopp left Borussia Dortmund in the summer after 7 years with the club.
His plan was to take a year off from football after that but he joined the Reds just 3 months after his Dortmund departure. However, that was not the first time he was approached by a Premier League club.
Manchester United made an approach to appoint him as a manager when he was still at Borussia Dortmund. Klopp turned down that opportunity as he said that the timing of the move was not right. (h/t Mirror)
The move came too early
Klopp said that he had a contract at the Bundesliga side at that time, and he was ‘not the guy to leave them’.
“The timing was not right. I had a three-year contract still at Dortmund, I’m not the guy to leave them.”
He then added that joining Liverpool was a different situation, as it just ‘felt right’.
He took over the reins at Liverpool in 2015 and has since delivered the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup.
