Paul Scholes urges Manchester United to sign Wesly Fofana
The 20-year-old joined the Foxes from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne last summer for £36.5m. A significant figure for a largely unproven player, Fofana has so far been worth his weight in gold.
With Caglar Soyuncu out injured, Fofana has received an extended run of games alongside Jonny Evans. So far, he has made 23 appearances, making one assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)
“If I was Ole and could sign a defender this month, I’d go for Wesley Fofana at Leicester.”
Impressive but suspect
The return of Eric Bailly has seen him form an excellent partnership with Harry Maguire in the heart of the United defence. While the Ivorian’s ability is not in doubt, his fitness record certainly is.
“In the middle, Ole still has to find Harry Maguire’s best partner. Eric Bailly has pace, but he is rash and picks up too many injuries.”
Scholes is also not convinced by Victor Lindelof. The Swede is often Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred partner for Maguire, but has not been convincing.
“Victor Lindelof plays the position better and seems to be Ole’s preferred option, but again, he is not totally convincing.”
A player of excellent potential
The United legend has been impressed by Fofana and believes he shows excellent potential. Despite our good start, United have been suspect at the back against the big sides. It is something Solskjaer should look to rectify either now or in the summer.
“He’s only 20, but he has been outstanding and he has the potential to be anything he wants to be.”
United clearly have a thing for Leicester’s centre-backs. Maguire plied his trade at the King Power stadium before coming to Old Trafford. We have also been linked to both Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans.

The Frenchman’s contract at Leicester runs until 2025. This gives the Foxes enough leeway when it comes to negotiations.
Fofana’s performances so far have been largely promising and he is certainly a player to watch out for. There is still much for him to learn and he will only keep getting better.
Whether Untied decide to make a move for him remains to be seen.
