Ronald Koeman increasingly confident of landing former Manchester United star Memphis Depay
According to El Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Daily Mail), Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman is confident of signing former Manchester United star Memphis Depay.
The Dutchman was linked in the summer with a return to United as a potential alternative to Jadon Sancho. He was touted to be available for as low as £11.3million.
With his contract set to expire in the summer, Barcelona can land the Dutch international on a free transfer.
Depay admitted just last week that he is happy at Lyon. Koeman has been a long-term admirer of the player and even managed him during his stint as Holland boss.
He was signed for Manchester United by former boss Louis van Gaal in 2015. A prolific player for PSV Eindhoven, Depay struggled to show his best on a consistent basis at United.
Depay eventually moved to Lyon in 2017. He has since rebuilt his reputation and is today a key player for the Ligue 1 side.
Depay made just 13 goal contributions in 53 games for United. He has enjoyed much better success at Lyon, where he has made 113 contributions in 157 games. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The 26-year-old is Lyon’s topscorer this season and is in the prime of his career. A move to Barcelona to play under a manager who has faith in him could be just what he needs.

Daniel James is the only specialist senior right-winger in United’s squad. While Amad Diallo can do his part, he may need to be bedded in before being deployed.
Depay for one does not appear to be on the verge of a return to the Theatre of Dreams. Barcelona for their part will potentially be getting an excellent player for free.
