Transfer News: Manchester United not to make a move for Sergio Ramos

Transfer News: According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United will not be making a move for Sergio Ramos in the summer.

The veteran defender is out of contract in the summer and is available for free. He had been linked with a move to England but is now expected to pen fresh terms at the Santiago Bernebeu.

The news will come as joy to former United superstar Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian had advised the club against making a move for Ramos.

Having begun his career at Sevilla, Ramos moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2005 for £24million. It was then a record fee for a Spanish defender.

The money was well spent as the defender has developed into one of the best players in world football. A highly decorated player, Ramos has won a plethora of trophies with both Real and Spain.

United are in search of a defender given Victor Lindelof’s troubles and Eric Bailly’s injuries. The latter, on his day, is an excellent defender and has shown it of late when fit.

A bullet dodged!

While Ramos’ legacy is not in doubt, his current efficacy is. At 34, he isn’t the dominant player of old and is nearing his career.

Signing him would amount to more of a PR win than footballing success. United have a number of players who are young and still developing. We can do better than have Ramos to look up to as a role model.

The club is better off bringing in another defender who can provide more of a long-term solution. With the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Dayot Upamecano available, there are better projects out there.

More Manchester United News

United are currently top of the table and have a real shot at the title this season. With the squad showing much promise, the club should look to add to it long term than flounder around with stopgaps.

Missing out on Ramos is not something that will come back to haunt us.
